About the Unit:

The Assistant Director of Development is a key member of the Alumni Relations and Development team at the University of Chicago, Harris School of Public Policy. This person will be responsible for ensuring that Harris meets annual and annual fund goals. Responsibilities include developing and executing annual fund strategy, overseeing class giving and alumni weekend/reunion fundraising, and ensuring seamless execution of all digital, mail, and telefund campaigns to meet Harris goals.

Unit Job Summary:


Annual Giving Strategy
– Implement, and manage a comprehensive annual giving program
– Develop creative campaigns to drive support for unrestricted gifts
– Identify opportunities to create new funds that drive annual giving including affinity and interest based fundraising
– Create marketing and solicitation materials and a virtual experience for annual giving
– Utilize existing communications and marketing outlets including the Harris website,, Social media, and the alumni newsletter
– Responsible for working with the Harris Alumni Relations and Development, internal partners, and vendors on the successful, accurate and timely execution of digital, mail and telefund campaigns. Will manage project timelines, schedules and task lists
– Serves as a liaison to central ARD and maintains a positive working relationship to ensure successful execution of supported campaigns.
– Act as the program manager for University-wide campaigns including Giving Day

Reunion and Class Giving
– Identify and recruit alumni from each reunion class in conjunction with the Alumni Relations team to serve as volunteer fundraising ambassadors
– Lead strategy on integrating solicitation communications as part of Harris’ overall marketing/communications plan.
– Collaborate closely with colleagues in the Harris Alumni Relations team and Marketing/Communications team to find alignment on development focused messaging.
– Maintain fundraising committee cohesion with regular individual contacts, conference calls, and routine fundraising updates. Create and implement a class giving/senior class gift strategy
– Support fundraising committee members in soliciting peers by providing information, offering solicitation coaching, and motivating alumni to inspire their classmates to support Harris on the occasion of their class reunion
– Help to set clear fundraising goals
– Identify class challengers to drive participation
– Update or create new reunion volunteer training materials, scripts, and guidelines on how to solicit peers

– Assess current giving levels to qualify for various societies and programs and make recommendations to enhance programs
– Write narrative stewardship reports for donors with messaging support from the Communications and Marketing team. Produce financial statements and reports to be included with narrative stewardship reports
– Build and sustain relationships with University colleagues, particularly those in Donor Relations roles, in order to share best practices and maintain current information about University donors

Job Type: Full Time


A minimum of 3 years of experience in related fields required
Familiarity with education sector and knowledge of the University of Chicago's unique culture preferred
